Stay abreast about the Scandria®Corridor

At the General Assembly of the Scandria®Alliance in Berlin on 2 November 2021, the political representatives of the cities and regions confirmed their common vision: to connect regions, communities, and economies through clean and smart transportation. The founding members welcomed seven new members, offering them to intensify collaboration on climate-smart mobility in the years to come as an important contribution to the achievement of the Paris Climate Goals.

On the occasion of the European Year of Rail, the Scandria®Alliance member regions presented their vision for rail transport in the northern Scandria®Corridor at the Scandria®Alliance Rail Forum. The event was held back-to-back with the Alliance's General Assembly in Berlin on 2 November 2021. The members underlined the importance of cross-border rail transport for the development of their regions and the fulfillment of Paris Climate Goals.

During the Scandria®Alliance General Assembly, the chairman of the Alliance, Minister Guido Beermann representing the Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg could welcome seven new members.

Thus, the Scandria®Alliance could double its membership and is now formed by eight full members and five associated members, representing cities and regions along the Scandria®Corridor with altogether 25 million inhabitants from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany and Italy.

At today's General Assembly of the Scandria®Alliance in Berlin, the representatives of the cities and regions agreed to cooperate even more closely. The Scandria®Alliance aims to further consolidate the geographical corridor between Scandinavia and the Adriatic as a regional development and transport axis. Guido Beermann, Chairman of the General Assembly and Minister of Transport of Brandenburg, emphasised the role of cross-border rail transport and promoted the expansion of European rail infrastructure for sustainable regional growth and climate protection.

Shipping and port operations are going to become autonomous and green

 

The Scandria Aliiance Working Group on Multimodality & Digitalisation organized a webinar on the potentials of Automation in Maritime and Inland Waterway transport on 2nd December 2020.
Presenters from the Port of Helsingborg, the Port of Venice, Berlin Westhafen and Kongsberg Maritime gave an overview of the state of the art on automation in waterbound transport.

The Joint Spatial Planning Department introduced listeners to the Scandria®Alliance and the Scandinavian Adriatic Corridor.
The 74 attendees representing regions from the entire Scandria®Corridor, from Norway to Italy, were briefed by the Port of Venice on a new planning software, which allows for a more efficient planning of railbound transport in ports. The Port of Helsinborg gave an insight into their strategy on automation, digitalization and electrification until 2035, with the goal to not only find more environmental-friendly solutions but also increase the ports handling capacity. Kongsberg Maritime gave an overview over the current attempts to develop autonomous ships within the H2020 project Autoship but also on other projects, such as the Yara Birkeland and the ASKO Sea Drones. BEHALA, as the operator of the Berlin Westhafen port, presented their A-Swarm project, aiming at developing autonomous vessel-units, that operate independently or in formation as one unit.

A few days after the 2nd International Ship Autonomy and Sustainability Summit, held by the European Commission, the webinar clearly showed that there is a lot of activities related to autonomous shipping in the Scandria®Corridor regions. The presenters clearly stated, that in this early phase of development, it is essential to collaborate to share knowledge. Especially for smaller market actors it is difficult to bear the full risk.
